Biblical Teaching

In the past most believers were taught and understood that the Bible set clear instructions about the drinking of alcohol and "strong drink". Bible verses for example such as in Ephesians

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery (excessive drunkenness or sexual activity). Instead, be filled with the (Holy) Spirit. Ephesians 5  18

Also verses like:

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;  you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your body.

1 Corinthians 6 19-20

And:

Then the LORD said to Aaron,  “You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the Tent of Meeting (Temple), or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.
Leviticus 10 8

This is stating that alcohol cannot be brought into God's presence. So there was an almost universal acceptance that Christians did not drink alcohol and this view has been widely held until the past few decades.

Today however many Christians do not subscribe to this view and would argue that the Lord Jesus drank `wine`. But it must be remembered that nowhere in the Bible does it say or imply that the wine Jesus drank, or transformed from water at the wedding of Cana, was fermented wine. It is our western culture and language that ascribes the word `wine` to fermented fruit juice. This was not the case in Bible times.

These principles apply to any drug that changes or takes control of a person’s mind.
